Project Overview
The James W. Foley Legacy Foundation, established in honor of journalist James Foley, is dedicated to advocating for the freedom of Americans held hostage abroad, promoting the safety of journalists, and inspiring moral courage worldwide.
Under the leadership of Diane Foley, the Foundation has become a pivotal force in shaping policies and raising awareness about the challenges faced by journalists and hostages.
James Foley, Diane’s son. was murdered by terrorists in the Middle East on August 19, 2014 — and she’s been in the battle to raise the profiles of Americans held overseas ever since. “Diane Foley has turned tragedy into purpose and relentless advocacy,” Jake Sullivan, the Biden administration’s national security adviser, said, “and that has made a real difference.”
Partners

Our Partnership
MG Strategy + Design partnered with the Foley Foundation during a transformative period, aiming to modernize its digital presence and enhance its communication strategies. Recognizing the Foundation’s expanding mission and the need for a more robust platform to share its stories and resources, our collaboration focused on both digital and print mediums to effectively convey its message.
Website Redesign
The Foundation’s previous website lacked the functionality and accessibility required to support its growing initiatives. Our team conducted a comprehensive audit and implemented a complete redesign using the latest WordPress CMS features. Key enhancements included:
- User Experience (UX) Design: Developed intuitive navigation and streamlined landing pages to facilitate user engagement and access to resources.
- Accessibility Compliance: Ensured the website met WCAG standards, making it accessible to a broader audience, including individuals with disabilities.
- Responsive Design: Optimized the site for mobile devices, ensuring seamless access across various platforms.
- Content Management: Implemented user-friendly blocks and patterns, empowering the Foundation’s team to manage content efficiently without developer assistance.
Branding and Visual Identity
Collaborating with Brian Oakes, director of “Jim: The James Foley Story,” we introduced a refreshed brand identity. The flame motif, symbolizing hope and resilience, became a central visual element, reflecting the Foundation’s mission and values.
Print and Special Content Design
Beyond digital solutions, MG Strategy + Design provided comprehensive print design services to support the Foundation’s advocacy efforts:
- Annual Reports: Designed visually compelling reports that effectively communicated the Foundation’s impact, initiatives, and financial transparency.
- Research Publications: Developed layouts for in-depth research documents, such as the “Bringing Americans Home” series, ensuring clarity and engagement for policymakers and stakeholders.
- Event Materials: Created cohesive designs for event programs, invitations, and promotional materials, enhancing the Foundation’s presence at key events like the Foley Freedom Awards.

Ongoing Collaboration
Our partnership with the Foley Foundation is ongoing, with continuous support in leveraging new tools and strategies to amplify its mission.
Through strategic design and storytelling, we aim to empower the Foundation to reach wider audiences, influence policy, and honor the legacy of James W. Foley.
